Discovery Education Streaming

Discovery Education Streaming is a video streaming service provided by the district.

Those of us who have been around for a while probably still call it United Streaming.

You can stream over 10,000 full-length videos or select one of 75,000 content-specific video segments, but there is so much more.

Many videos come with ready-to-use lessons, worksheets and quizzes.

You can also find:
  • Songs like this one about the number line;
  • Other audio including speeches, readings and classical music;
  • A sound effects library and an image library (including high-resolution Library of Congress images) to use with multi-media projects;
  • Games;
  • Interactive maps and videos.
And all resources come with citations that can be copied and pasted into any bibliography.

You can build assignments or create your own quizzes. Put students into classes and manage their work through the program.

You will need your campus's passcode to create an account, and students can use the generic campus student account or be set up with an account of their own.  See your technology coordinator or librarian for your campus passcode.

Information at Infotopia.info

For our first Tech Tuesday, we will discuss Infotopia. Infotopia is a search engine that allows users to access trusted websites selected by librarians, teachers and other educational consortia. The website was created by, and is maintained by, Dr. Michael Bell (former chair, Texas Association of School Librarians) and Carole Bell (former middle school librarian and director of libraries).

Are you looking for lesson plans, videos (foreign language, Annenberg, History.com, etc.) grants, freebies and more? Then check-out Teachertopia.

TeacherTopia is designed to provide resources, lesson plans, and more for K-12 teachers.

Do you teach lower grades or have students on a lower reading level? Then have them use Kidtopia.

A Google alternative safe search engine for elementary school kids

Are you looking for information for your own continued studies or to use with students in AP, Dual Credit or other advanced situations? The check-out AcademicIndex.

The Academic Reference and Research Index is a high level educator approved search engine of selected reference and research scholarly information sites for college students.

TeacherTopia, Kidtopia and AcademicIndex are all available at Infotopia.info. Something important to consider is that Infotopia is a free resource. While no entity can add their links or other information directly to the site, it does have the drawback of having advertisements on the pages. With the access to Hot Topics, images, sound and links to almost any topic you can think of, Infotopia.info is an asset for every classroom, even with advertisements.  However, keep your audience in mind when using the resource and educate students ahead of time on where they need to keep their attention.

For more information on this resource, please visit with your campus librarian.

Happy Searching!
